A senior army officer survived an early morning ambushed
Thursday near the region’s largest military camp here, police investigators
said.
Army Col. Edwin Respicio, of the 10th Army reserved command
base, was driving his way to the Army base when the suspects riding in tandem
drove beside his car and pumped bullets hitting him in the face.
Police Supt. Lemuel Gonda, chief of the city’s police
operation, said that the unidentified gunmen shot Respicio in the suburban village of Patag ,
home of the Army’s 4th Infantry Division, the largest military camp in Northern Mindanao .
Respicio, who survived the slay attempt, was taken to a
nearby hospital by a taxicab driver who happened to pass by the crime scene
prior to the arrival of law enforcers and investigators.
Gonda said that police investigators are still gathering
witnesses while the car owned by the victim is now undergoing examination at
the police regional command here.
“Based on the trajectory of the bullets, the police
laboratory experts could determine the kind of firearms and the exact position
of the car and the victim when the ambuscade took place,” Gonda said.
He said the police are still trying to establish the motive
for the shooting.
Capt. Patrick Martinez, the spokesperson of the Army 4ID,
said that they would leave the investigation to the police.
“The 10th Army reserved base is not under the jurisdiction
of the 4ID but we would want to be updated on the investigation,” Martinez said.
The slay attempt of Respicio is one of the daring ambushes
involving a senior military officer here as the local law enforcers battle the
upsurge of crime incidence in this trading capital of Northern Mindanao.
