3 NPA rebels killed in Sorsogon town clash; soldier killed in Masbate ambush

From the Philippine News Agency (Jul 16): 3 NPA rebels killed in Sorsogon town clash; soldier killed in Masbate ambush

Army soldiers killed at least three suspected New People’s Army (NPA) members in an encounter on Thursday at Barangay Bacolod, a remote village in Irosin, Sorsogon, according to the spokesperson of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Bicol.

Earlier in San Jacinto, Ticao Island, three NPA Sparu members killed an Army trooper while on his way from Bagacay port to Masbate, according to Army Capt. Mardjorie Panesa, 9th Infantry Division spokesperson.

Police Chief Insp. Malu Calubaquib, PNP Bicol spokesperson, said one Salvador Enriola alias Art/Bonoy was among the three NPA rebels that died in the encounter.

The other two slain rebels have yet to be identified, she said.

Calubaquib said joint elements of the Army’s 31st Infantry Battalion and the Military Intelligence Company led by 2Lt. Pendijito Niko were on a patrol operation at around 11:15 a.m. when they encountered nine NPA rebels in the hinterland village of Bacolod.

The engagement led to a 30-minute gun battle that resulted in the killing of the three communist rebels who were members of a Sparu unit operating in Sorsogon province.

Soldiers recovered from the fight scene three .45-caliber hand guns and empty shells.

They are still in pursuit operation against the NPA rebels that fled immediately when they saw that three of their companions were felled during the skirmish.

The bodies of the slain communist dissidents will be brought to the PNP Irosin station for identification and documentation.

Panesa said the name of the slain soldier is being withheld pending notification of the family.

She said the soldier was on his way to Masbate City to send money to his family when gunned down by the three NPA rebels.

The communist insurgents immediately fled using two motorized boats.

A responding Army squad on board a military vehicle, while on its way to the crime scene, hit a land mine planted by the NPA, but no casualty was reported.
