Three communist guerrillas were killed in an encounter in Irosin, Sorsogon late Thursday morning while a soldier was gunned down by rebel assassins in Masbate province the same day.

In the Irosin incident, troops of the Army’s 31st Infantry Battalion were conducting house-to-house dialogues in Barangay Bacolod when they were engaged by members of a so-called special partisan unit of the New People’s Army around 11:30 a.m., Captain Marjorie Panesa, spokesperson of the 9th Infantry Division, said.

Two soldiers, Corporal Alfredo Durana and Private First Class Joey Turado, were wounded.

Around 9 a.m. that day, the soldier of the 9th Infantry Battalion, who Panesa did not name, was about to leave Bagacay port in San Jacinto, Ticao Island for mainland Masbate when he was shot dead by three rebel gunmen who then fled in motorboats.

A squad of soldiers responding to the incident was also attacked with a landmine but no one was injured.
