With the Philippine military now modernizing,
newly-appointed Philippine Army (PA) head Major Gen. Eduardo Año on Wednesday
announced that they are now starting their territorial defense orientation.
"We will start orientation of the Army units towards
territorial defense, we will conduct exercises and training while we are
waiting for the equipment," he added.
Año said that this will ensure that troops and units will be
ready once the new equipment arrive.
This includes air defense capabilities which is scheduled to
arrive by "Horizon 2" of the AFP Modernization.
"Horizon 1" is for 2013 to 2017 while
"Horizon 2" is slated for 2018 to 2022, and "Horizon 3" is
scheduled for 2023 to 2028.
This also includes the "shore-based missile
system" which was rescheduled for "Horizon 2" in exchange for
force protection equipment, squad designated rifles and radios.
Año also stressed that the territorial defense training is
not aimed at developing situation in the West Philippine
Sea .
