MILF chief negotiator wants to meet with senators on Bangsamoro Basic Law

From GMA News (Jul 27): MILF chief negotiator wants to meet with senators on Bangsamoro Basic Law

Hopeful that the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) will be enacted under the Aquino administration, Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) chief negotiator Mohagher Iqbal said he intends to meet with all the senators individually.

In an ambush interview on Monday at the Batasang Pambansa for President Benigno Aquino III's State of the Nation Address, Iqbal said he sent a letter to all senators last month.

"When Congress resumes session, we are going to talk to them individually...Sinasabi namin na jointly signed by my counterpart and me, as chair of the Bangsamoro Transition Commission, that when Congress resumes, we are going to pay a courtesy call to them individually," Iqbal told reporters.

The BBL was stalled in the Senate after Senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. junked the Malacanang-drafted proposal and instead said he will propose a substitute bill.

Marcos is the chairman of the Senate committee on local government tasked to discuss the provisions of the proposed Bangsamoro law.

The BBL is the product of the peace agreement signed between the Aquino government and the MILF. It seeks to create a Bangsamoro political entity which will replace the ARMM.

Iqbal admitted that the MILF sees "problems" in having the BBL passed in the Senate, but said that they will do "everything possible" to have it passed under the Aquino administration.

"There is no other way to do except really to pass the BBL. It has been long overdue and this should be the time to do it because the two agreements—FAB [Framework Agreement on the Bangsamoro] and CAB [Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro]—were signed during the time of Aquino and then the BBL was drafted during his time," he said.

"It would be natural that this President will see to it that it will pass," Iqbal added.
