From the Philippine News Agency (Jul 28): EMC units hot on trail vs bandit group who attacked mining firm

Troopers from the Eastern Mindanao Command (EMC), headed by the 1001st Infantry Brigade are now conducting pursuit operations against the 30 rebels who attacked and burned the advanced security post of the Apex Mining Company at Sitio Lumanggang, Barangay New Leyte, Maco town Compostela Valley last Sunday night.

This was disclosed by EMC public affairs office chief Capt. Alberto Caber in a statement Tuesday.

The attack on the outpost, manned by the Monggos Security Agency, took place at 8:45 p.m., according to Caber.

"Moreover, an improvised explosive device planted by the same bandits exploded at electric sub-station in Sta Clara, Barangay New Leyte of the same province," Caber said.

Accordingly, the New People's Army (NPA) bandits abducted and subsequently released two personnel of APEX mining after burning a backhoe in the area.

"The soldiers from 46th Infantry Battalion (a field unit of the 1001st Infantry Brigade and local PNP (Philippine National Police) immediately responded and still on their pursuit operations," Caber added.

Initial investigation by the PNP and testimonies of civilians in the area showed that extortion demands by the NPA bandit group are the motive of the attack, he added.
