A joint pursuit operation against suspected New People's Army men who ambushed personnel of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology led to another encounter in Surigao del Sur between the military and suspected members of the NPA rebels.
Troops from the 36th Infantry
Brigade, the 7th and 9th Special Forces Company, and the Provincial Public
Safety Company of the Philippine National Police were conducting the operation
in the area when they were fired upon by around nine suspected NPA members of
the Guerilla Front Committee 19B of the North Eastern Mindanao Regional
Committee, the 4th ID said.
The encounter lasted for about 15
minutes and the NPA members were "forced to leave the area," the 4th
ID said, adding that government troops recovered one AK-47 with ammunitions,
materials to make an improvised explosive device, "subversive documents,
and personal belongings."
The encounter happened in the
middle of a joint pursuit operation in line with an ambush on Monday, when
suspected NPA rebels rescued two of its detained members. Two
jail guards were killed, while three others were reportedly taken
as well.
The 4th ID on Friday said three
BJMP personnel were wounded in the ambush, and identified those kidnapped as
SO2 Feliciano Polana and SO2 Juan Salazar.
It added that the NPA rebels
burned down a container van during the ambush.
