From the Manila Times (May 3): Army troopers encounter NPAs

Cavinti, Laguna: Philippine Army troopers from the 1st Infantry Battalion, 202nd Brigade engaged a group of suspected communist rebels in a firefight on Saturday at Sitio Magipang, Brgy. Mahabang Lalim, General Nakar, Quezon.

The firefight against armed men believed to be members of the New People’s Army (NPA) sub-regional guerrilla unit lasted for about 40 minutes.

According to local residents who witnessed the encounter, the NPAs suffered a number of casualties. The outgunned guerrillas withdrew towards Brgy. Pagsangahan. No government trooper was hurt in the incident.

An AK47 assault rifle with four magazines, one M16 rifle, one M1 carbine rifle, three homemade shotguns, a Motorola HH radio and three backpacks containing personal belongings and subversive documents were left by the fleeing rebels.

Prior to the encounter, there were reports received by the 1st Infantry Battalion that communist terrorists are spotted in the area.

Sources said the NPAs are set to conduct tactical offensive actions against government forces and other targets, particularly government facilities in the area.

Col. Rodel Mauro Alarcon, commander of the 202nd Brigade, assured the public that they will continue to secure area.
