A military unit in Maguinanao prevented another attempt by
outlawed Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) on Thursday to blow up a
bridge linking Cotabato
City and Sultan Kudarat
province.
This after bomb experts from the 34th Infantry Battalion
defused an improvised bomb left at Mita bridge in Datu Unsay town in
Maguindanao at 11 a.m., according to Army Capt. Joann Petinglay.
Petinglay, speaking for the 6th Infantry Division, said a
man reported to the 34th IB Charlie Company detachment about a suspicious box
left atop the bridge.
The Army responded and cordoned off the area.
Army bomb experts safely defused the IED fashioned from a
live hand grenade attached to a rocket propelled grenade, similar improvised
bombs set off by BIFF guerillas in various areas in Maguindanao during the
massive law enforcement operations last February.
Petinglay lauded the alertness of civilians who quickly
reported to Army detachment because it stopped the motive of the attackers to
inflict injuries on civilian commuters.
At the same time, she condemned the remnants of the BIFF who
have been targeting bridges and other government infrastructures in
Maguindanao.
She reiterated the call of 6th Infantry Division chief Maj.
Gen. Edmundo Pangilinan for civilians to help police and military authorities
prevent bombings.
"It's the people who will suffer at the end of the day
if the BIFF atrocities are not stopped," she said.
