Soldiers surrender after Leyte videoke bar shooting

From the Philippine News Agency (Mar 13): Soldiers surrender after Leyte videoke bar shooting

The Philippine Army’s 19th Infantry Battalion has already turned over to the local police the two soldiers involved in a videoke bar brawl early Thursday that killed three civilians.

Col. Nedy Espulgar, Philippine Army 19th IB commander said they’re hoping for a fair investigation tagging two soldiers as suspects of a shooting incident.

“We already turned over the two soldiers to the local police and we are committed to participate in the probe,” Espulgar said.

Soldiers Cpl. Baltazar Nacion and Pfc. Roberto Abrantes were singing inside a videoke bar in Hiagsam village, Jaro, Leyte around midnight on Wednesday when the two drunk costumers approached them, ensuing a heated argument.

“One of the victim beat Nacion using a gun. The two soldiers ran away and get M-16 rifles in their camp in Carigara town and returned to Hiagsam village,” Espulagar said.

Upon return, a fire fight erupted between the soldiers and civilians that killed Andres Cadapan, Joselito Sunico, all residents of Jaro town. Leamae Jamito, a waitress from Ormoc City was accidentally hit by bullets.

Before the incident, the two troopers left their camp late Wednesday night in nearby Carigara town to visit Nacion’s wife in Jaro town.

Before heading back to the camp, they stopped by a videoke bar, had few bottles of beer and sang, according to Espulgar.

Both troopers are members of Bravo Company of 19th IB based in Carigara town. They are now detained in Jaro municipal jail.

With this incident, the official reminded soldiers to stay away from night spots especially when they are armed, even if they are off-duty.
