A 44-year-old active member of the New People's Army (NPA),
who collected revolutionary tax for the movement, was gunned down by his
companions at about 12 noon Monday at Barangay Lourdes, Pilar, Sorsogon.
A police report identified the victim as Juan Arena Jr.,
farmer and resident of the area.
Chief Supt. Victor P. Deona, Bicol police regional director,
said the killing happened at about 12:00 noon after Arena received a message
from an unknown texter asking him to meet the latter in a place in their village.
With his wife Eva accompanying him, Arena went to the place
of rendezvous where four young-looking men armed with .45-caliber pistol and
.9mm-caliber pistol waiting and told his wife to leave the place but she did
not heed them.
The rebels shot Arena in front of his wife.
The police learned that Arena was an active member of rebel
movement who was collecting revolutionary tax from their co-villagers but did
not remit it to the organization, resulting in his execution.
The suspects casually walked away from the area while the
victim's wife was speechless and was assisted by her fellow villagers.
Arena's dead body was brought to a funeral home for autopsy
while police recovered empty shells from the crime scene.
