Eastern Mindanao Command head Lt. Gen. Aurelio Baladad on
Thursday downplayed the New People's Army (NPA) efforts to apologize for their
landmine attack which damaged a patrol vehicle and wounded three police
officers last March 8 in Davao City.
"Their apology is superficial. The issue here is that
the NPA laid the mines on a busy road, disregarding the safety of civilians. It
is a clear violation of the CARHRIHL (Comprehensive Agreement on Human Rights
and International Humanitarian Law) which they claim they are adhering to. The
premature detonation could have also hit civilian motorists plying the
road," he said.
Earlier, the NPAs apologized to Davao City Mayor Rodrigo
Duterte and claimed that the landmine attack was just an accident.
"The continuous disregard by the NPAs of International
Humanitarian Law through the use of landmines, is a clear manifestation that
they have no regard for the safety of the innocent civilians," Baladad
said.
