USAID, partners turn over stores to ‘Yolanda’ survivors in Tacloban

From the Philippine News Agency (Mar 12): USAID, partners turn over stores to ‘Yolanda’ survivors in Tacloban

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and private partners turned over Wednesday the reconstructed community stores to 40 beneficiaries whose livelihood were shattered by super typhoon Yolanda.

USAID, in partnership with Coca Cola and Procter and Gamble (P&G) aims to restore the supply chain of primal basic commodities and eventually uplift the livelihood of sari-sari store-owners.

“For over a hundred years of operation, Coca Cola has only a simple goal... to open happiness. And we found out that the best way to do this is by helping others,” said Adel Tamano, vice president for public affairs and communication of Coca Cola Philippines

Beneficiaries of the said project came from the city’s villages of Utap, Sagkahan, Kalanipawan, Caibaan, V&G Subdivision, Basper and Tigbao.

“I sincerely thank USAID and its partners for giving us this blessing because our store was washed out by the typhoon. Driving motorcycle is our only source of income aside from that,” said Simeon Bucatcat, a beneficiary.

He added that he is very glad to be one of the beneficiaries of this project and promises to do his best in improving their lives.

US Ambassador to the Philippines Philip Goldberg USAID Mission Director Gloria D. Steele were supposed to lead the turnover, but missed the event yesterday due to “engine failure” of their private plane before it took off Manila.

USAID’s sari-sari store reconstruction project is being implemented under the livelihood component of the USD142.5 million USAID Rebuild Project for the recovery of super tyhpoon Yolanda survivors in central Philippines.
