From the Mindanao Examiner BlogSpot site (Feb 1): Philippines investigates crash of ageing air force plane that killed 2 pilots

The Philippine Air Force is investigating the crash of an ageing SF-260 trainer plane that killed two Filipino pilots off Nasugbu town in Batangas province just outside Manila.

The fatalities were identified as 1st Lt. Nazer Jana and Capt. John Bayao – both were on a training flight when their plane plunged into the sea on Saturday. The tragedy was witnessed by soldiers and civilians who were watching the plane from ashore.

The Philippines have been using a fleet of SF-260 since the 1970s and were previously used in anti-insurgency operations in the southern region of Mindanao.

The country has one of the oldest military equipment in Asia and mostly relying on old US aircrafts and ships to protect it from external aggressors.
