Another aging trainer aircraft from the vintage fleet of the Philippine Air Force (PAF), frequently referred to irreverently as "widow makers", claimed the lives of its two pilots when it crashed Saturday morning off the coast of Batangas Province.

PAF spokesman Lt Col. Enrico Canaya said the trainer plane SF-260FH No. 1034 went down at around 9:30 a.m. some 300 meters off the shoreline of Barangay Bucana in the coastal town of Nasugbu.

The SIAI-Marchetti SF.260 (now Alenia Aermacchi SF-260) is an Italian light aircraft marketed as an aerobatics and military trainer.

Canaya said the aircraft took off at Fernando Air Base in Lipa City around 9:07 a.m. as part of a three-aircraft formation training mission.

"The two pilots of the ill-fated aircraft were declared dead and brought to Villamor Air Base at around 11:40 a.m.," Canaya said.

"PAF has already informed the next of kin and relatives of the pilots killed in the accident," he added.

The pilots who perished in the crash were Captain John M. Bayao, instructor pilot, and 2Lt. Al-Nazer B. Jana, student pilot.

PAF chief Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Delgado immediately ordered an investigation into the crash.

Because of this, the SF-260FH fleet might be grounded until such time that the Board of Inquiry finishes its investigation.
