From the Sun Star (Jan 30): Basilan, Sulu ambush incidents hurt 5
Five people, including two soldiers, were wounded in separate ambush incidents in Basilan and Sulu provinces, officials said Friday.
The first ambush took place around 9:45 a.m. Friday in Basilan, while the second happened around 1:30 p.m. in Sulu.
Ensign Chester Ian Ramos, Joint Task Force Zambasulta information officer, said three people were wounded in the first incident, when suspected Abu Sayyaf bandits ambushed a group of militiamen around in the village of Limbocandis, Sumisip, Basilan.
The militiamen were conducting security patrol near a government project site when the bandits attacked them, he said.
Ramos said the three victims were all civilians, who were hit by stray bullets during the incident.
The bandits fled when the militiamen returned fire, triggering a brief firefight.
The militiamen recovered an improvised explosive device abandoned by the bandits.
Four hours after, two soldiers were wounded in the second ambush at Sitio Panding in the village of Bungkaong, Patikul, Sulu.
Captain Ma. Rowena Muyuela, Western Mindanao Command information officer, said the soldiers were on a convoy of military trucks when the Abu Sayyaf bandits ambushed them.
Muyuela said the soldiers were not immediately identified except that they belong to the Army's 35th Infantry Battalion.
She said the soldiers were rushed to the hospital and have been in stable condition Friday.
