From ABS-CBN (Jan 23): 5 NPA rebels killed in Surigao City clash: military
SURIGAO CITY -- Five members of the communist New People's Army were killed in a clash with government troops in Barangay Mati, Surigao City in Surigao del Norte on Thursday, the military said.
Members of the 29th Infantry Battalion clashed with at least 15 members of the NPA Guerilla Front 16, Northeastern Mindanao Regional Committee.
The firefight lasted for 15 minutes.
There was no reported injured from the government side.
Soldiers recovered two M-16 rifles, an M-16 rifle with a M-203 grenade launcher, 10 backpacks, and an improvised explosive device (IED).
Military and police in the area are now on alert for possible retaliatory attacks by the rebels
