Soldiers wounded defending gov't road project in Bukidnon, honored

From the Philippine News Agency (Dec 7): Soldiers wounded defending gov't road project in Bukidnon, honored

Eastern Mindanao Command head Lt. Gen. Aurelio Baladad honored the four soldiers wounded while defending a ongoing government road project at Barangay Makalungay, San Fernando town, Bukidnon against rebel attack last Dec. 3.

Awarded the Wounded Personnel Medal were Sgt. Samuel M. Mapo, Pfc. Rex A. Palma, Pvt. Gezer G. Pelonio and Pvt. Robert R. Zamora, all members of the Army's 68th Infantry Battalion.

Baladad personally pinned the medals to the soldiers during an awarding ceremonies at the Heroes Ward of Naval Station Felix Apolinario Station Hospital in Panacan, Davao City Saturday.

The action of the four and their other companions prevented the rebels from torching heavy equipment that are being used for the road project, which will connect San Fernando town, Bukidnon to Talaingod town, Davao Del Norte, upon completion.

“Because of their gallantry, they were able to outmaneuever and inflict casualties to the New People Army (NPA) bandits despite being outnumbered and wounded; as a result they were able to prevent the burning of equipment. The gallantry in action beyond the call of duty exemplified by our soldiers deserve no less than a military award for their individual acts as their demonstrated exemplary actions against overwhelming enemies," Baladad said.
