Escaped Abu Sayyaf captive Lorenzo Vinciguerra is in an undisclosed hospital in Manila where he is being treated, officials said Sunday. The Swiss birdwatcher, who was in captivity for nearly three years, was airlifted from Zamboanga City late Saturday afternoon, the military said.

Swiss embassy officials led by Ambassador Ivo Sieber and military officials led by Armed Forces chief of staff General Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr. welcomed Vinciguerra at Villamor Airbase.

Vinciguerra and fellow birdwatcher Elwold Horn, 52, were kidnapped on February 1, 2012 in Tawi-Tawi. The Dutchman Horn remains in captivity.

Earlier, the military said Vinciguerra had suffered a “minor wound from a bladed weapon on his left cheek” during his escape.
