The military on Monday denounced the New People’s Army (NPA)
for the kidnapping of a militiaman and his two sons, a military spokesperson
said.
In a statement released Monday, Army Maj. Christian Uy, spokesperson
of the army’s 4th Infantry Division here, said that Memerto N. Araño and his
sons Christopher and Donald were abducted shortly before the military declared
the 30-day nationwide suspension of the military operation (SOMO) last Dec. 19.
2014.
He said that about 30 fully armed men believed to be NPA
members of the North Central Mindanao Regional Committee picked up the victims
at the their residence in Bayugan City on the night of December 17, 2014.
Araño’s two sons were later released.
Araño is an active member of the Citizen Armed Forces
Geographical Unit (CAFGU) assigned at a detachment in Villa Undayon Patrol
Base, Barangay Villa Undayon, Bayugan City , Agusan
Del Sur.
Uy said that Araño was off-duty and unarmed when taken by
the NPA rebels from their home.
Army Major General Oscar T Lactao, Commander of the 4ID,
described the abduction of Araño as another criminal act perpetrated by the
NPA.
Lactao ordered all subordinate unit commanders to coordinate
with the local law enforcers to track down and locate the perpetrators.
The government officially announced the declaration of
Suspension of Military Operations (SOMO) effective on 12:00 midnight on
December 18, 2014 until 12:00 midnight on January 19 next year.
