AN improvised landmine was planted by suspected communist
rebels on a road in a remote village in Ragay town, Camarines Sur, police reports said on Friday.

The Camarines Sur police chief, Senior Supt. Primo Golingay, said the mine was discovered in Zone 1, Barangay Baya in Ragay by a retired fireman, whose name was withheld for security reasons, at around 9 a.m. Thursday.

Golingay said the explosive device was made up of an improvised blasting cap and a 70-meter long electric wire. It was disarmed by soldiers from the Army 22nd Infantry Battalion and was brought to the Ragay police station for proper disposition.

The communist New People’s Army (NPA) maintains a considerable presence in Camarines Sur, and clashes with government forces had increased recent years.

Last year, NPA guerrillas killed two soldiers and two militiamen in separate attacks.

Last November, a group of rebels ambushed a team of militiamen and soldiers who were responding to reports that the NPA had killed a civilian in Pasacao town. A militiaman was killed in the 30-minute encounter.
