Retreating BIFF men gun down village chairman's brother

From InterAksyon (Oct 23): Retreating BIFF men gun down village chairman's brother

Retreating armed elements of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) gunned down the brother of a village leader after conducting harassment action against an Army camp before dawn Thursday at Barangay Katiko, Pres. Quirino, Sultan Kudarat.

A sketchy report reaching Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) General Headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City indicated that Macmac Salamanca died on the spot from multiple gunshot wounds in the head and body.

The public affairs office of the 6th Infantry Division said Salamanca was the brother of the village chief in the locality.

"The armed BIFF men opened fire when they encountered him along their escape route. Salamanca was tending his rice field at that time. The armed men also took the victim's Honda XR200 motorcycle," the military said.

Prior to this, more than 300 BIFF armed men led by the combined bands of Commanders Sukarno Sapal alias Diok and Edzrapel Manalasal and a certain Commander Maganon harassed the Katiko Army detachment manned by the Civilian Armed Auxiliary (CAA) at around 4:05 a.m.

The detachment is under the 38th Infantry Battalion.

After an exchange of gunfire lasting more than 10 minutes, the BIFF armed men withdrew toward Maguindanao.

There was no reported casualty on the government side.

It was while withdrawing that the BIFF men saw and killed Salamanca.
