Bomb explodes in Basilan

From the Mindanao Examiner BlogSpot site (Sep 24): Bomb explodes in Basilan

A suspected bomb explosion was reported by the police late Wednesday in the restive province of Basilan in the Muslim autonomous region.

Police said the blast occurred near Campo Uno in Lamitan City.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, but just recently two improvised explosives also went off in the village of Kulay Bato also in Lamitan City.

The 1st Infantry Division said the twin explosions blamed by the military to the Abu Sayyaf targeted the Department of Public Works and Highway after the agency rejected extortion demands by the terror group linked to Jemaah Islamiya.

Earlier in September, troops foiled an Abu Sayyaf bombing in Lamitan City following the recovery of a powerful improvised explosive in Sabong village.

The Western Mindanao Command said army soldiers disarmed the explosive which was assembled from cooking cylinder with ammonium nitrate and iron nails and wired to blasting caps and an electronic timer.

The military tagged Abu Sayyaf militant Erik Ajibon as behind the foiled bombing.
