Police arrest most wanted kidnapper in Sultan Kudarat

From the Philippine News Agency (Aug 1): Police arrest most wanted kidnapper in Sultan Kudarat

Joint police and military authorities arrested here Thursday dawn a senior member of the Pentagon kidnap gang and al-Khobar extortion group following a week-long surveillance, police said.

In a report, Chief Supt. Lester Camba, police regional director for SOCCSKSARGEN region, said Said Giad, who carries a P175,000 bounty for his arrest, was cornered by policemen, military and village officials in Barangay Sampao, Isulan, Sultan Kudarat.

Quoting reports from the Sultan Kudarat police provincial office, Camba said Giad, also known as “Commander Maestro,” was wanted for extortion activities against bus firms and kidnap for ransom operations in the provinces of Maguindanao, Sultan Kudarat, North Cotabato and South Cotabato and in Cotabato City.

Police said Giad was linked to the 2007 abduction of five engineers working for the Philippine National Oil Company (PNOC) in North Cotabato. They were identified as Engineers Eric Nonan, Jeffrey Estember, Ferdinand Bergonia, Rudilyn Felix and Rodelo Pillen.

Camba said Giad was placed on surveillance by operatives of the Sultan Kudarat Provincial Police Office, Isulan Municipal Police Office, and the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) with the help of village officials.

Police record showed that Giad was a henchman of Tahir Alonto, founding chair of the Pentagon kidnap for ransom gang that gained notoriety in the late 1990s after victimizing Chinese nationals working for an irrigation dam in North Cotabato.

Alonto and his men were also linked to several bombing attacks against Weena Bus Company and Yellow Bus Company for failure to pay revolutionary tax.

Giad is now detained at Isulan police detention cell.
