NPA rebel killed, 9 others captured in southern Negros clash

From the Philippine News Agency (Jul 14): NPA rebel killed, 9 others captured in southern Negros clash

A New People’s Army (NPA) rebel was killed while nine others also believed to be rebels were captured following an encounter with Philippine Army soldiers Monday morning in Barangay Santol, Binalbagan, Negros Occidental.

First Lt. Von Ryan Gomez, head of Civil Military Operations of the 11th Infantry Battalion, said the identities of slain rebel and those who were captured are not yet available as of this time.

The encounter took place in Sitio Mainit from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. between troops of the 11th IB Charlie Company and about 20 NPA rebels, Gomez said.

Lt. Col. Paulito Idul, commander of the 11th IB, said they are trying to ascertain if the nine individuals are indeed rebels because some of them possess guns.

After the clash, Army soldiers recovered eight firearms, including four shotguns with seven live ammunition, two .357 caliber magnum revolvers with 15 ammunition, a caliber .45 pistol with 18 live ammunition, and an improvised M14 rifle (single shot), with five ammunition.

Pursuit operations against the fleeing rebels are ongoing as of press time.
