From the Philippine News Agency (Apr 28): Rebel killed in Albay clash with Army troopers

A New People's Army (NPA) fighter was killed following an encounter Monday afternoon with Army troopers from 91st Division Reconnaissance Company in Barangay Matanglad, Pio Duran town, Albay.

The incident took place around 1 p.m. while the soldiers were conducting routine security and clearing patrols, said 9th Infantry Division spokesperson Capt. Mardjorie Panesa.

Around five rebels were encountered triggering a short firefight which killed one of the rebels and caused the survivors to flee.

Recovered from the slain NPA fighter was a 9mm pistol. No losses were reported in the government side.

"Balikatan" activities are being conducted in the nearby town of Guinobatan, Albay.

Last Sunday, around 9:45 a.m., troopers from the 5th Scout Ranger Company and 31st Infantry Battalion encountered 10 NPA fighters in the vicinity of Barangay Lapinig, Magallanes town, Sorsogon.

The rebels quickly fled after a short firefight which also resulted in the capture of one of their companions whom an undetermined amount of explosives and bullets were seized.

Pursuit operations are still ongoing as of this posting.
