From the Philippine News Agency (Mar 12): Eastern Mindanao Command honors 7 soldiers killed in action

The Eastern Mindanao Command on Wednesday honored the seven soldiers of the 39th Infantry Battalion who were killed while defending Matanao town, Davao Del Sur from rebel attacks last Monday.

Capt. Ernest Carolina, 10th Infantry Division spokesperson, and one of the field units attached to the command, said that a short mass was held at Camp Panacan, Davao City around 8:00 a.m.

After the mass, funeral honors were accorded to the fallen soldiers.

Lt. Col. Noel Detoyato, Army spokesperson, earlier said that families or next-of-kin of soldiers killed in battle will be given a burial assistance amounting to P100,000.

Aside from this, relatives of the slain troopers will also be receiving P250,000 cash assistance from the Presidential Management Staff.

This aside from other service benefits, Detoyato added.

Besides monetary aid, children of slain soldiers will also be given scholarship grants and other educational aid.

Meanwhile, those wounded severely will be receiving P100,000 while those who sustained minor injuries will be paid P50,000.

Depending on the recommendation of their unit commander, wounded personnel may be also given the "Wounded Medal Award" and those killed in action may be decorated with the "Military Merit Medal", "Gold Cross Medal" and "Distinguished Conduct Star".
