Abdulrab Rasul Sayyaf

Abdulrab Rasul Sayyaf, 68, a former anti-Soviet mojahedin, leads the Dawat party and is an MP for Kabul.

Sayyaf is the man who first invited Osama bin Laden to Afghanistan.

Although he is a hard-line Islamist - the Philippine rebel group Abu Sayyaf was named after him - at one point Karzai was reported to be backing him.

He has opposed women's rights and helped pass an amnesty for war crimes through the Wolesi Jirga.

Winning the support of former Herat governor and ex-water and energy minister Ismail Khan should boost his vote.

Running mates:
  • First vice-president, Mohammad Ismail Khan;
  • Second vice-president, Abdul Wahab Urfan.
