Two soldiers, one of them a lieutenant, was killed while four others were wounded following a New People's Army (NPA) ambush in Barangay Cogorin, Lopez town in Quezon province Monday morning.
This took place around 7:30 a.m.
Lt. Col. Oliver Maquiling, 2nd Infantry civil-military operations chief, said that all of the casualties belonged to the 85th Infantry Battalion.
He added that the troopers were headed at Barangay Vegaflor for a military-initiated medical mission when fired upon by rebel forces.
In the ensuing firefight, one lieutenant was killed along with an enlisted personnel while four others were wounded.
An undetermined number of rebels were killed and wounded in the government troopers' return fire.
These soldiers were aboard a KM-450 truck when ambushed.
Maquiling described the ambush area as isolated and forested.
Pursuit operations are still ongoing.
