Tired of the incessant and causeless fighting, a New People's Army (NPA) fighter has voluntarily surrendered to troopers of the 79th Infantry Battalion conducting a routine security patrol in Barangay Nagbalaye, Sta Catalina, Negros Oriental.
In a report forwarded to the PNA Wednesday, Lt. Col. Harold Anthony Pascua, the unit's commanding officer, the surrenderee was identified as Juvani Suarez, 39 and a resident of Sitio Aponoy, Barangay San Francisco, Sta. Catalina.
The latter is the second in command of Squad 3, SDG Platoon, South Eastern Front operating in the areas of Sta Catalina, Siaton and part of
Suarez also handed to authorities one .357 Smith and Wesson Magnum revolver with five rounds.
The former rebel claimed that all he wants is to be reunited with his family and restart a meaningful life in the community.
“It is because of the teamwork between the local officials, communities and 'Bayanihan' teams on outreach program in the far flung areas that awakened NPA members and encouraged to abandon the armed struggle,” Pascua stressed.
He also urged remaining NPA members to lay down their arms and join the mainstream society and avail the programs of the government for armed struggle has no place in the province of Negros Oriental.
