Soldiers recover 163 NPA landmines in Agusan del Sur - military

From InterAksyon (Dec 13): Soldiers recover 163 NPA landmines in Agusan del Sur - military

An Army file photo shows what the military says are NPA landmines

Government troops recovered a stash 163 landmines apparently assembled by the New People’s Army in Agusan del Sur, the military said Friday.

Captain Alberto Caber of the Eastern Mindanao Command described what the soldiers discovered in Sitio Mampait, Barangay Kauswagan, Loreto town as a “regional NPA landmine factory.”

“A generator was also recovered. (Some) residents in (the) said barangay reported the site where the landmines were kept by the NPA,” Caber said.

The military has regularly accused the communist rebels, who often use command-detonated explosives in ambushes, of violating international humanitarian laws that ban the use of landmines.

However, the rebels have countered that the ban covers only contact-detonated devices, or those that explode when pressure is applied to them, and not command-detonated explosives.
