Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) spokesperson Brig. Gen. Domingo Tutaan on Monday said that they are verifying reports that Ustadz Habier Malik, a ranking Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and top aide of Nur Misuari, was present during the attacks on
Initial reports disclosed that Malik was sighted off Sta. Catalina where around 20 civilians were taken hostage by the MNLF.
And when asked whether Malik's alleged presence was done with the blessing of Missuari, Tutaan said that they are still determining this.
"We are still assessing whether he (Missuari) has direct intervention on the matter," Tutaan stressed.
The former MNLF chair is in Sulu, according to the latest military reports.
He also declined to comment on whether additional MNLF forces are headed towards Zamboanga but stressed that the entire Western Mindanao Command is on alert to prevent a similar incident.
Tutaan also added that the situation so far is stable.
"No outbreak of (additional) violence has been noted so far."
