Leftist Rebels Attack Japanese Firm In Southern Philippines

From Bernama (Aug 14): Leftist Rebels Attack Japanese Firm In Southern Philippines

Leftist rebels on Wednesday attacked a new a Japanese multinational firm in southern Philippines, burning several trucks and disarming guards, Xinhua news agency reported the military as saying.

Captain Severino David, spokesperson of the military's Eastern Mindanao Command, said at least 20 New People's Army guerrillas stormed the compound of Sumitumo Fruits Co (Sumifru) in Bangbang village, Matalam town in Mindanao's North Cotabato province at 2:15am local time and overpowered company guards.

The guerrillas confiscated four shotguns and handheld radios from the security men before setting on fire six trucks parked at the firm compound. The rebels later fled to an unknown direction.

David said the attack could be due to the firm's refusal to pay up the rebels' revolutionary tax exacted from businesses and politicians.

Police and army troops are now pursuing the NPA rebels.

The 4,000-strong NPA is an armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines and is fighting a leftist insurgency in 60 Philippine provinces since 1969.
