From the Philippine News Agency (May 4): Five soldiers killed, two others hurt in Negros Occidental firefight

Five soldiers were killed while two others were wounded on Saturday morning in an encounter with the New People's Army (NPA) rebels who raided the Philex Mining Corporation compound in Barangay Camindangan, Sipalay City, Negros Occidental.

The rebels raided the compound around 9 p.m. Friday and torched two employee bunkhouses, one Kubota tractor with drilling machine, one generator set, ICOM radio, and personal belongings of some workers.

Pursuing troopers, all assigned at the 303rd Infantry Brigade, encountered the rebels at Sitio Omas in Barangay Camindangan around 7:40 a.m. Saturday where a firefight ensued which lasted for one hour.

During the battle, five soldiers were killed while two others were wounded with the NPAs taking an undetermined number of casualties aside.

The names of the government casualties were not released pending notification of their next-of-kin.

Six rifles were also reported stolen by the fleeing rebels.

Pursuit operations are ongoing.
