Village chief killed in Surigao del Norte

From the Philippine News Agency (Apr 10): Village chief killed in Surigao del Norte

Two unidentified armed assailants shot dead at close range a barangay official while visiting his copra drying shed Tuesday morning at Barangay Macopa, San Francisco, Surigao del Norte.

The Surigao del Norte Police Provincial Office identified the victim as Domingo B. Amparo, 50, the barangay captain of the said village.

Jeniel Amparo, presumed to be a relative of the victim, and the shed caretaker Michael C. Labago, who were both at the said place witnessed the shooting but accordingly failed to help the victim nor to avert the shooting because of fear for their own lives.

They described the perpetrators as 5'2" to 5'6" in height and were 22-25 years old. They said they did not have any knowledge as to the identity of both suspects.

They claimed that the suspects approached Amparo and then shot him three times, hitting him in different parts of his body, then immediately fled from the area. Amparo was then rushed to a local hospital near the area but was pronounced dead upon his arrival by the attending physician.

The San Francisco Municipal Police Station is yet to determine the weapon used and the other facts surrounding the incident which may lead to its early resolution.

The authorities are also not discounting the possibility and were considering as among the angles of their investigation, that the shooting was perpetrated by the New Poeple's Army. The place is considered to be a communist-influenced area.

The San Francisco Police is conducting a deeper probe to determine the motive behind and other circumstances surrounding the barangay official's shooting.
