From InterAksyon (Mar 27): Rebels, soldiers clash in Ormoc
Government troops and New People's Army fighters clashed over two days at the start of the Holy Week in Ormoc City, Leyte.
Captain Dranreb Canto, civil military operations officer of the Army's 802nd Brigade, said the first clash occurred Monday on the outskirts of Barangay Liberty at 3 p.m. when patrolling troops of the 19th Infantry Battalion, led by 2nd Lieutenant Amin Macalintangui, were fired upon by about 10 rebels, triggering a 15-minute gun battle. A soldier sustained minor injuries.
The second clash happened in Barangay Ga-as around 1 p.m. Tuesday as soldiers pursued the rebels from the previous day’s incident.
No troops were hurt in 15-minute firefight but the military received still unconfirmed reports that at least three rebels had been killed.
The soldiers recovered a backpack, an improvised bandoleer and six M16 magazines with 115 rounds of ammunition.
