The Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) in coordination with the military’s Task Force Zamboanga (TFZ)has deployed 1,500 personnel to secure the observance of the Holy Week in this southern port city.

ZCPO officer-in-charge Sr. Supt. Edwin de Ocampo said they have readied security plan dubbed as “Oplan Semana Santa” for the Holy Week observance which started on Palm Sunday locally known as “Domingo Ramos."

The Holy Week observance will culminate on Sunday known as the “Domingo Enkwentro (Salubong).”

De Ocampo disclosed that most of the personnel they will utilize will be deployed at the Climaco Freedom Park in Mount Abong-Abong, Barangay Pasonanca, seven kilometers north of this city on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

Troops will also be deployed at Monte Santo in Barangay Lumayang, an uphill village 12.8 kilometers east of this city.

The two places draw thousands of Catholic faithful during the Holy Week for the Via Crucis (Way of the Cross).

Thousands also camp overnight on Maundy Thursday and go home after the Jesus Christ’s seven last words mass on Good Friday.

De Ocampo said joint police and military personnel will also be deployed on the different parishes for the “Visita Iglesia.”

They will also establish surprise checkpoints in strategic places of the city especially in areas leading to the places of worships, De Ocampo said.

Meanwhile, he urged the public to be vigilant during the Holy Week observance citing maintenance of security is everybody’s concern.
