NPA surrenders in Zamboanga del Sur

From the Philippine News Agency (Jan 31): NPA surrenders in Zamboanga del Sur

A New People’s Army (NPA) rebel, who desires to live peacefully together with his family and due to hardship in the mountains, surrendered to the military in Zamboanga del Sur province on Tuesday.

Lt. Col. Rommel Almaria, commander of the Army’s 55th Infantry Battalion, identified the rebel surrenderor as Alex Dungog alias Ronald, 28, a resident of Barangay Tabugon, Tambulig municipality.

Dungog surrendered following a series of negotiations around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday at the detachment of the 55th Infantry Battalion’s Alpha Company in Tambulig town, Almaria said. He said Dungog, who surrendered without firearms, is a member of the NPA’s Front Committee Joji of the Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee based in Zamboanga del Sur.

He said Dungog was recruited in October last year. Meanwhile, First Infantry Division commander Maj. Gen. Ricardo Rainier Cruz III commended the Bayanihan Team and the officials of Barangay Tabugon for the successful negotiations that led to Dungog's surrender.
