BAYAN: Malacanang is the omnishambles in Subic toxic waste incident

The umbrella group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan today led protesters in front of the US embassy to denounce the dumping of toxic wastes in Subic. The wastes are believed to have come from a US Navy ship which were collected and disposed by a private contractor. The group pressed for the junking of the Visiting Forces Agreement which allows US troops and their vessels to enter the Philippines. “However Malacanang tries to assuage the public’s concerns regarding the toxic wastes dumped in Subic, there can be no denying that the incident has raised serious issues regarding the presence of US troops and the materials they bring in,” said Bayan secretary general Renato M. Reyes, Jr. “Malacanang is the omnishambles when it comes to national sovereignty and the environment. Not only has it shown a lack of seriousness in going after the perpetrators, it obfuscates the facts on what constitutes toxic wastes and goes to great lengths to defend the VFA. Its position is untenable. It’s like national interest has zero-value for this administration,” he added. “There will be no toxic wastes dumped if there are no US warships entering our territory and bringing in these waste materials. Malacanang can split-hairs on what it considers as toxic, but the fact remains, test results show that the toxicity levels of the materials exceed acceptable levels,” Reyes asked....
