Camp Navarro, Calarian, Zamboanga City – August 9, 2022

An Abu Sayyaf Group member surrendered yesterday afternoon (August 8) to troops of the Joint Task Force Basilan.

A.k.a. Totoh Akalun, a member of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) under Pasil Bayali, a.k.a. Kera, 33 years old, married, and a resident of Barangay Upper Benembengan, Sumisip, Basilan surrendered to Lt. Col. John Ferdinand Lazo, Commanding Officer of the 64th Infantry Battalion based in Barangay Tumahubong, Sumisip, Basilan. Akalun also surrendered one 12-gauge Shotgun.

Brig. Gen. Domingo Gobway, Commander of Joint Task Force Basilan attributed this accomplishment to the sustained military and intelligence operations in the area and the support of the police and the local government of Sumisip town.

Lt. Gen. Alfredo Rosario, Jr., Commander of Western Mindanao Command said the surrender of Akalun manifests that the government is not only winning the hearts of the people but also that of the enemy.

“Our accomplishments are results of the combined efforts of the troops, the local government units, and the populace in the joint battle against terrorism, insurgency, and any form of criminality,” Lt. Gen. Rosario, Jr. added. “The government and the soldiers will be more than willing to welcome rebels who wish to lay down their arms, join the mainstream society and live a peaceful life”.
