SHARIFF AGUAK, Maguindanao – Local authorities on Friday raised the alert status of all police stations across the province following a blast from a grenade projectile that damaged a mosque here.
Colonel Jibin Bongcayao, Maguindanao police director, said the police here have devised a security plan to prevent a repeat of the attack in this town on Thursday night.
“Additional police personnel were deployed and more roadblocks were set up around the town,” he said in a statement.
In a report, Major Radzak Musa, municipal police chief, said unidentified men fired an M79 grenade launcher toward the town government center at Barangay Poblacion around 8 p.m. Thursday.
The explosive device landed at the dome of the mosque located inside the compound and beside the town’s Commission on Elections (Comelec) office.
“We could not say this early if it is election-related but we are not discounting that,” Muza told the Philippine News Agency on Friday.
“This is unfortunate because a holy place was partially damaged,” he added.
Muza theorized the perpetrators could have been targeting the police office located nearby in retaliation to the death of a suspected highway robber during a recent police operation here.
“I suspect that the grenade was maybe intended for the police,” he said, adding that nobody was hurt in the explosion.
