From the Philippine News Agency (Apr 24, 2021): 2 Abu Sayyaf bandits killed in Sulu clashes (By Teofilo Garcia, Jr.)
Two Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) members, including a brother of its leader, were killed in clashes in the hinterlands of Sulu, military officials announced Saturday.
Lt. Gen. Corleto Vinluan Jr., commander of the Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom), said the initial firefight took place around 9:30 a.m. Friday at the border of Barangays Taung, Taglibi and Panglayahan in Patikul, Sulu.
The troops of the Joint Task Force (JTF)-Sulu were conducting focused military operations when they chanced upon a group of followers of ASG leader Mudzimar Sawaadjaan alias Abu Mundi, Vinluan added.
He said the clash lasted for about five minutes killing two ASG members identified as Mujafal Sawadjaan and Muktihar Taha, while their companions fled.
“Mujafal was on the ASG watchlist as of the yearend 2020. He is the brother of Mundi. On the other hand, Muktihar was not on the watchlist but he was known to be an active follower of Mundi,” he said.
Maj. Gen. William Gonzales, commander of the JTF-Sulu, said sporadic clashes followed as troops pursued the fleeing ASG members.
He said Sawadjaan and Taha’s bodies were retrieved at the clash site around 3:20 p.m. Friday during clearing operations.
Last week, a foreign terrorist and two ASG members under the group of Mundi were killed in a clash as a result of the focused military operations in Sulu.
