Senior officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ Southern Luzon Command (AFP-Solcom) were forced to call off a “surrender” ceremony and kick-off of its bogus socio-economic projects in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro last January 9. This was after NPA fighters fired shots at a helicopter that was supposed to fetch the said officers from Sitio Mantay, Barangay Monte Claro. The helicopter took off to avoid damage.
The guest of honor was no other than Solcom’s Lt. General Antonio Parlade Jr., who was earlier dropped off by another helicopter, alongside officials of the province’s task force to end local communist insurgency. Due to their ride’s premature take-off, Parlade and his officials were forced to walk to the next barrio with a phalanx of soldiers guarding them. In a pique, the Solcom chief later declared Mindoro is the “center of war vs. Reds” in the whole of the Southern Tagalog.
