GENERAL SANTOS CITY – The city police here has a created a special investigation team to look into the killing on Wednesday of a barangay chairman and concurrent ex-officio councilor of Glan town, Sarangani province.

Col. Gilberto Tuzon, acting city police director, said Thursday the move aims to facilitate the resolution to the murder of Barangay Glan Padidu chairman Isedrito Poncardas Cañete.

Tuzon said the investigation team, which will include investigators from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-Region 12, is directly under his supervision and is expected to solve the case within the week.

“If there will be no positive developments in the next few days, we will create a task force EGO (elected government official) to involve other investigation units,” he said in a radio interview.

Cañete was president of the Liga ng mga Barangay of Glan and represents the barangays in the municipal council.

He also served as municipal councilor of Glan for three straight terms from 2010 to 2019.

Accompanied by his driver and barangay treasurer, the 56-year-old Cañete was on his way to the city proper aboard a gray Toyota Fortuner when he was waylaid by two motorcycle-riding suspects along the national highway in Barangay Lagao past 10 a.m.

Cañete died of gunshot wounds on the head and body while his two companions were unhurt.

Tuzon said they have gathered statements from witnesses and close associates of the victim that could help establish possible leads in the case.

“We already got some vital information, but we can’t disclose them yet as it might compromise the ongoing investigation,” he added.
