The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Thursday assured all Filipinos that it continues to stand for human rights while performing its mandate to protect the people and the state.

"We stand up for human rights and continue to stand by its principles, even in the face of the (coronavirus disease 2019) Covid-19 pandemic, in our performance of our mandate as protector of the people and the state," AFP chief-of-staff Gen. Gilbert Gapay said in a statement, in observance of the World Human Rights Day.

He added that the AFP is one with every Filipino worldwide in commemorating the occasion.

"The adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948 will continue to hold us accountable to our commitment to protect human rights, especially in conflict," Gapay said.

To this end, the AFP chief is urging everyone to resist radicalization and seek a just end to all violence.

"Security is a shared responsibility. With every Filipino's cooperation, we can all be human rights advocates and peacebuilders. Let us all ensure that the tenets of UDHR are upheld and respected!" Gapay said.

This year's World Human Rights Day carries the theme, "Recover Better - Stand Up For Human Rights", that focuses on upholding human rights in recovery efforts amid the Covid-19 health crisis.
