Two communist New People’s Army (NPA) rebels died in an encounter with government forces Sunday in Jabonga town in Agusan del Norte, the Army’s 29th Infantry Battalion (29IB) said.

Lt. Col. Aristotle Antonio, 29IB commander, said government forces launched an operation Sunday following reports on the presence of about 15 NPA rebels in the area.

“The NPA terrorists, according to the reports of the civilians, were in the area during the celebration of the anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP),” Antonio said in a press statement Monday.

Antonio said the encounter in Barangay Baleguian lasted for almost an hour, resulting in the death of two NPA members under the command of a certain Marvin Bugas, a sub-leader of the NPA's Guerrilla Front 16.

The Army recovered two AK-47 rifles, assorted magazines with live ammunition, one cellphone, personal belongings, and subversive documents with high intelligence value.

Jabonga Mayor Napoleon M. Montero, in a separate statement on Monday, said Barangay Baleguian has been identified as among the conflict-affected areas in the province of Agusan del Norte.

“The LGU (local government unit) Jabonga will do its part to support the Philippine Army and all the involved government agencies and instrumentalities in ending the insurgency problem to finally bring peace and development in the area,” Montero said.

Col. George L. Banzon, commander of 901st Infantry Brigade, said the encounter was a product of the continuing efforts to deny the "communist terrorists from conducting atrocities" during the holidays.

“We intensified our monitoring and operations during these holidays to ensure that these communist terrorists will not have the opportunity to unleash violence to highlight CPP’s (Communist Party of the Philippines) anniversary which they usually practice in the past years,” Banzon said.

He said the encounter should serve as a stern warning to the remaining NPA members in the area, even as he called on the remaining rebels to surrender.
