DAVAO CITY –– Two suspected communist New People’s Army (NPA) rebels were killed and another one captured in a clash with government forces in a remote village here on Wednesday, Sept. 9, a military official said Friday.

Lt. Gen Jose C. Faustino Jr., commander of the Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom), said troops of the 27th Infantry Battalion
clashed with NPA rebels in Saloy, Calinan district here, which resulted in the death of two rebels and the capture of another. He said the wounded rebel had been rushed to the hospital.

“The culture of security in the city of Davao is indeed alive,” Faustino said.

“With the help of concerned residents, inhumane acts and possible atrocities against this peaceful city have been prevented.”

“We call on the remaining members of the (NPA) to surrender and lay down their arms,” he added.

He said troops recovered an M4 rifle, three M16 rifles left by the rebels at the clash site.

The NPA, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), has been waging an armed rebellion in the countryside since 1968, making it one of the world’s longest-running and deadliest insurgencies.
