RODRIGUEZ, Butuan City – The regional command of Caraga region reported on Thursday the arrest of an alleged commanding officer of the communist-New People’s Army (NPA) Platoon 1, Sentro de Grabidad, Sub Regional Command (SDG-SRC) of the CPP-NPA Northeastern Mindanao Regional Committee (NEMRC).
Maj. Renel E. Serrano, Regional Public Information Office chief of Police Regional Office 13 (PRO 13), told The Manila Bulletin on Thursday that the alleged NPA commander is temporarily placed under police custody after his arrest at a hospital in Tagum City, Davao del Norte on Wednesday.
PRO 13 Regional Director Brig. Gen. Joselito T. Esquivel, Jr, identified the arrested NPA commander as Joel Delahilba, 32, alias “Kid/Viray.”
“He was apprehended while undergoing medical treatment at Davao Regional Medical Center in Tagum City yesterday due to a gunshot wound on his left rib and parietal area,” Esquivel said. The suspect was wounded in a gunbattle with government security forces in Surigao del Sur recently.
Operatives of PRO13, 9th Special Forces Company of the Philippine Army, and Tagum City Police served the warrant of arrest at around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Judge Lilibeth O. Ladaga of Regional Trial Court Branch 28, 11th Judicial Region issued the arrest warrant for frustrated murder with a recommended bail bond of P200,000, and attempted murder with a recommended bail bond of P120,000, Esquivel said.
“As of now, he is placed under hospital arrest,” the region’s top police official said.
“We will make sure he receives proper medical treatment for him to fully recover. His safety and security are also our concern,” Esquivel said.
He told the remaining NPA members that there is no brotherhood in the armed struggle and that the government’s efforts continue to reach out to those who want to lay down their arms.
