From the Visayan Daily Star (Apr 8, 2020): Soldiers help fund virus fight
Soldiers of the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division in Western and Central Visayas are donating a percentage of their base pay to augment funds of the government to fight COVID-19, local Army spokesman Capt. Cenon Pancito yesterday said.
The percent deduction will be equitable to rank, with the AFP chief of staff to give the biggest contribution of P10,484, while the lowest ranking soldier, who is a Private, an Airman or an Apprentice Seaman, will be donating P100, AFP spokesman Brig. Gen. Edgard Arevalo said in a statement.
This was in response to the admission of President Rodrigo Duterte that the government will not have sufficient funds to deal completely with the massive impacts of COVID-19, following the extension in the implementation of Enhanced Community Quarantine in Luzon until April 30.
Considering the AFP’s present fill-up of personnel, except civilian employees, the amount expected to be raised will be around P16,953,490.04, according to Arevalo.
He added that the donation of each AFP personnel will be deducted from their respective base pay for the month of May.
The donated amount is up for use in the purchase of medical supplies and equipment.
Pancito said that the amount deducted will be from 0.05 percent to 7 percent, depending on the rank of AFP personnel.
