SWS Media Release (printer-friendly version here)

In view of a sponsor-authorized publication of a commissioned survey module, SWS is disclosing the results and technical details for the benefit of the public.

A special module sponsored by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) was implemented within the Fourth Quarter 2019 Social Weather Survey, conducted on December 13-16, 2019.

The survey used face-to-face interviews of 1,200 adults (18 years old and above) nationwide: 300 each in Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, in the Visayas, and Mindanao (sampling error margins of ±3% for national percentages, and ±6% each for Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao).

The area estimates were weighted by the Philippine Statistics Authority medium-population projections for 2019 to obtain the national estimates.

The survey results were presented by Mr. Vladymir Joseph Licudine, SWS Deputy Director for Survey Design, Analysis and Training, at the Kapihan sa Manila Bay at Café Adriatico with Marichu Villanueva press conference on March 4, 2020.

The main findings are as follows:

  • 79% of adult Filipinos are satisfied, 15% are undecided, and 5% are dissatisfied with the performance of the AFP. This gives a net satisfaction rating (% satisfied minus % dissatisfied) of +74, classified by SWS as “excellent”; [SWS terminology for Net Satisfaction Ratings: +70 and above, "excellent"; +50 to +69, "very good"; +30 to +49, "good"; +10 to +29, "moderate", +9 to -9, "neutral"; -10 to -29, "poor"; -30 to -49, "bad"; -50 to -69, "very bad"; -70 and below, "execrable"]
  • Majority have much confidence in the AFP in defeating the communist rebels or Communist Party of the Philippines/New People’s Army (CPP-NPA), and terrorist groups in the Philippines such as the Abu Sayyaf (ASG) and Islamic State or ISIS;
  • 62% say they have much confidence in the AFP in defending the territories of the Philippines in the West Philippine Sea and other places against any foreign threats.
